Abstract

This paper presents a simple segmentation method based on K-means clustering procedure and a pre-processing step. The first step applies a bilateral filter for smoothing the image in the regions of low color variations that would enhance segmentation. After smoothing, the image is segmented by K-means clustering. We compare the bilateral filter to other image smoothing filters and show its advantages in its use in image segmentation.
